Can Wisconsin Residents Buy Cannabis in Minnesota? Here's What You Need to Know

Can Wisconsin Residents Buy Cannabis in Minnesota?

Yes! Wisconsin residents age 21 and older can purchase adult-use cannabis at licensed Minnesota dispensaries with valid proof of age, such as a Wisconsin driver’s license. You don’t need to live in Minnesota to shop.

One important distinction: buying cannabis legally in Minnesota does not mean you can bring it back to Wisconsin. Cannabis purchased through Minnesota’s adult-use program cannot legally be transported across state lines.

Planning your first visit? Do Be Kind Dispensary is a locally owned cannabis dispensary in La Crescent, Minnesota, just across the river from La Crosse. Here’s what to know about identification, payment, and planning your visit.

Can I Buy Cannabis in Minnesota with a Wisconsin ID?

Yes. Your valid, unexpired Wisconsin driver’s license is accepted as proof of age and identity at Do Be Kind. You must be 21 or older to purchase adult-use cannabis. Bring your physical ID

What Do I Need to Bring?

You only need a couple of things for your visit:

  • Your valid government-issued photo ID

  • Cash or a debit card

Do Be Kind accepts cash and debit cards, with an ATM available on-site. We don’t accept credit cards at this time.

No shopping list? No problem. You’re welcome to browse, ask questions, and take your time. Our team can walk you through the options.

Can I Bring Cannabis Back to Wisconsin?

This is where things get really important. Technically by law, no. Even though you can legally purchase cannabis in Minnesota, transporting cannabis across state lines is illegal under federal law.

That includes driving from Minnesota back into Wisconsin with cannabis in your vehicle. It's one of the most common questions we hear, and one of the most important. We always encourage our guests to understand and follow the laws where they live and wherever they're traveling.

Can I Consume Cannabis While I'm Visiting Minnesota?

Yes, but where you consume cannabis matters. If you're 21 or older, Minnesota law allows adults to use cannabis in certain places, but there are still important restrictions to keep in mind.

Under Minnesota law, permitted locations include private residences, private property that isn’t generally accessible to the public where the owner hasn’t prohibited use, and establishments or events specifically licensed for on-site consumption.

Additional restrictions still apply:

  • No cannabis use in a motor vehicle, and never drive impaired

  • No smoking or vaping where it’s prohibited, including indoor public places covered by Minnesota’s Clean Indoor Air Act

  • No smoking or vaping where a minor could inhale the smoke or vapor

  • No cannabis on public school grounds or federal property

  • Smoking and vaping adult-use cannabis are prohibited in multifamily housing buildings, including balconies and patios

Don’t assume a hotel or vacation rental allows cannabis use. Check the property’s rules and any applicable local restrictions before making plans.
